Disney held a town hall meeting regarding streaming on the afternoon of July 9, 2026. It has been reported that Smith, who spoke at the town hall meeting, revealed a proposal to 'allow viewers to access Disney+ for free' as part of future plans.
According to Business Insider, Smith did not specify the timeline or scale of the free plan initiative. Sources familiar with Disney's streaming strategy say the free plan proposal is part of ongoing discussions about ways to improve services for users.

Disney+ announced it will introduce vertical video in January 2026, and Erin Teague, executive vice president of Disney's entertainment division, said, 'We want Disney+ to be a destination you visit every day.' Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro has told employees that 'product and technological innovation in streaming is our top priority,' and the free plan is seen as part of that reform.

According to data released by the global data analytics company Nielsen at the end of 2025, streaming services that are 'free to watch but display ads,' such as YouTube, Roku Channel (a popular streaming service in North and Central America), and Fox-owned Tubi , are expected to see a significant increase in viewership compared to paid subscription services.
Furthermore, data from April 2026 shows that the top three free streaming services account for 18.7% of US television viewing time, up from 16.8% in the same month of the previous year and 12.7% two years prior. Business Insider points out that 'with a free plan, Disney+ could stand out among paid streaming services.'
