The usage of 'Claude Cowork' is revealed to be primarily for administrative tasks such as creating slides, with software development accounting for 8.7% of the total. This indicates that AI usage is expanding beyond coding.

Anthropic has released a report based on 1.2 million sessions showing how the AI ' Clude Cowork, ' which assists with PC operations, is being used. The report revealed that approximately one-third of the sessions were categorized as 'business processes and operations,' while software development accounted for less than 10%.

Claude Code , released by Anthropic in February 2025, is a coding tool equipped with an AI agent. Anthropic was surprised that 'people who had never even opened a terminal before have created an agent that can organize folders, delete duplicate files, and create spreadsheet formulas.'

However, because the terminal was still a literal 'black box' and many users didn't know what to do with it, they developed 'Claude Cowork' to extend Claude Code's agent functionality into a chat interface.

The data compiled by Anthropic consists of 1.2 million Claude Cowork sessions collected and anonymized between May 11th and 31st, 2026, which were categorized into 20 types of work.

The results showed that the most common use case was the 'business process and operation' category, accounting for 33.4% of the total. This category includes tasks such as consolidating scattered, up-to-date information into a single report, creating checklists for when employees come to the office, and cross-referencing spreadsheets. Anthropic analyzes that this category is logical because the tasks involved span multiple job functions such as general affairs, human resources, and accounting, so many people would utilize Claude Cowork.

The second most common category, at 16.4%, was 'Content Creation and Copywriting,' which involves creating drafts, proposals, and slide materials, as well as integrating information. These tasks often start from a blank slate, suggesting that Claude Cowork was used to help take that first step. Similar to the 'Business Processes and Operations' category, it's also likely that Claude Cowork is used in collaborative work involving multiple departments, such as marketing, public relations, development, and project management.

The third and subsequent categories each account for less than 10%, with 'Software Development' (8.7%), 'Development, Operation, and Infrastructure' (7%), and 'Research and Information Analysis' (6.4%) following.

Anthropic noted that while coding remains the most prominent application of AI, its use in daily tasks is also increasing. Their goal is to 'show areas where AI is being used to help people exploring how to integrate AI products into their daily work,' and they plan to continue publishing data and reporting on the expansion and changes in AI usage.
