Proton announces Lumo 2.0, a privacy-focused chat AI that surpasses Claude Sonnet 4.6 in performance.
Proton, the company behind the privacy-focused email service 'Proton Mail,' announced its chatbot AI ' Lumo 2.0 ' on June 30, 2026. Lumo 2.0 features a new architecture and adds image generation and editing, web search, user-manageable memory functions, and application-specific assistants.

Lumo is an AI assistant that promises not to record conversations or use user data for model training, and according to Proton, it has had over 10 million users since its launch. The newly announced Lumo 2.0 comes in two models, Max and Lite, and is operated on European infrastructure and protected by Swiss privacy laws and zero-access encryption .
Proton displays scores from its independent benchmark, the 'Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index,' which combines 10 assessments related to agents, coding, scientific reasoning, and general knowledge. According to this index, the Lumo 2.0 Max scored 51, surpassing the Claude Sonnet 4.6's 44. Meanwhile, the Lumo 2.0 Lite scored 34, and the older Lumo 1.4 model scored 15.
Lumo 2.0 offers two modes: Fast mode, which prioritizes speed, and Thinking mode, which is designed for complex problems. This configuration allows you to choose the response method that best suits your needs, from simple questions to tasks involving multiple conditions.
Lumo 2.0 is also a multimodal AI that can handle text and images. It can generate images based on prompts and rough sketches, and also supports editing such as changing the background, adjusting colors, and removing unwanted objects. Furthermore, it has been implemented to read photos, graphs, documents, and screen captures and ask questions about their content.
For questions requiring up-to-date information, Lumo 2.0 searches the web and provides quoted answers. Because it can access news, events, financial data, and weather forecasts, users can verify the basis of the answers. Proton claims this mechanism improves the accuracy and comprehensiveness of answers and reduces hallucination.
The 'Memory function' allows users to manage which information to store in Lumo 2.0, which to delete, and which information to not store at all. Because it inherits the user's preferences and work style, it reduces the effort of repeatedly entering the same instructions. For work spanning multiple sessions, you can use 'Projects,' an encrypted workspace that consolidates conversations, files, and instructions.
Furthermore, 'Custom Lumos,' a dedicated AI configured for specific uses, has been added to Lumo 2.0. By pre-configuring writing style, response format, and other settings, you can obtain responses tailored to your specific needs, such as document creation or research, every time. In addition, the context window has been doubled in size to handle longer documents and larger datasets.
Lumo 2.0 offers a free version with basic functionality, as well as paid plans: Lumo Plus and Lumo Professional. Lumo Plus, available for ¥1,624/month or ¥14,988/year, provides unlimited chat, Projects, advanced image generation, and priority access to the fastest models. Lumo Professional is a plan for corporate teams, featuring functions to support secure collaboration while minimizing the risk of data breaches.
Proton states that 'with Lumo 2.0, you no longer have to choose between advanced AI and privacy,' arguing that AI should empower people, not exploit them. They also say that as AI becomes the foundation for work, creativity, and communication, privacy cannot be treated arbitrarily, and that Lumo incorporates Proton's privacy standards.
