A nicotine-loving cat who adores cigarettes, alcohol, and laziness. A heavy smoker among heavy smokers, he picks up cigarette butts today, suffers withdrawal symptoms during his part-time job, and reaches for cigarettes with his meager savings...
The landlord is on the verge of exploding with frustration over the cat-eared tenant who spends all their money on cigarettes instead of paying rent.
Then one day, Alive receives a message from his responsible younger sister, Imoko, asking him to 'send a picture of your room.' Yanineko's greatest crisis is about to begin.

An interview with Toru Inada, who plays the landlord of the apartment building where the cats live, has also been released.

Q:
First, please tell us how you felt when you were cast in this film.

Landlord role played by Toru Inada (hereinafter, Inada):
I had been acting out the opening scene of episode 1 since the audition stage, and I wanted to deliver an interesting performance without compromise, and I went into the audition determined to play the role myself, so I was incredibly happy when I received the news that I passed. At the same time, I also thought, 'This is a big deal, this is a huge responsibility!' In many ways.

Q:
Next, please tell us about your impressions of the work and what you found appealing about it while performing.

Inada:
Anyway, it's a work with a tremendous impact. But it's not monotonous; it has a good balance of pace and emotion. You're forcibly dragged from an ordinary atmosphere into the extraordinary, with dizzying shifts in mood. Every character has some really unpleasant aspects, yet they're also undeniably lovable.
If I carefully choose my words, it would be something like this.

Q:
What do you think are the appealing aspects of the character 'Landlord' that you played?

Inada:
No matter how terrible the ordeal, he has the generosity of heart to forgive everything in the end. He sometimes scolds the scruffy cats, but even that is out of kindness. He has an immeasurably large capacity as a man, a bold and strong core. However, he also harbors a mysterious side that he can't tell anyone about. Shall I stop choosing my words carefully now? His charm lies in the fact that he's a kind, perverted guy with a huge dick.

Q:
So, are there any aspects of the character you play, 'the landlord,' that have influenced you?

Inada:
I don't think it happens very often, and I don't want to be influenced by it, but I suppose there's a part of me that looks at my co-stars playing the residents with kind eyes. I'm not looking at them with lecherous eyes, I promise. I'm not sure if this is a change, but I was working with a model wearing cat ears on a certain shoot, and she looked incredibly attractive to me, which might be because I was playing the landlord. At that time, I was looking at her with slightly lecherous eyes.

Q:
Many other characters appear in the story, but is there a particular character you like?

Inada:
Honestly, once you know what each character is really about, it's incredibly difficult to choose. As anime characters, they're all interesting and appealing, but they're all pretty much scumbags. It's a neck-and-neck race at a very low level. If I had to pick one, I'd say Ochinpo Tatsuro. The reason is that, when I looked at him using a point deduction system, he had fewer negative points than the other characters. Also, he's kind of raw and erotic.

Q:
I'd also like to hear about your experience with voice recording. What were your impressions of the recording process?

Inada:
I'm having fun. But I wonder how the main female cast members are feeling. I'm not sure if they're enjoying themselves, but there's no embarrassment or hesitation in them; rather, they're confident and determined to make it even more entertaining, and I actually have a sense of respect for that. Every time they deliver terrible acting or vulgar lines, I'm laughing on the surface, but there are many times when I'm holding back tears of emotion. This is true.

Q:
Did you receive any direction from the production team when you were acting?

Inada:
I don't do any special preparation. I think being a landlord means being at the mercy of the other party's actions. I think the easiest way to give directions is to put them directly into words, but I'm always grateful that sound director Hamano-san is very considerate and chooses his words carefully. It's also a fun process to decipher the true meaning behind the direction that he has softened by the expressions he has chosen.

Q:
Please tell us if there were any parts that particularly impressed you while listening to or experiencing the performances of the other cast members.

Inada:
In a scene where Yakuneko and the landlord are talking, I interrupted Yakuneko's lines, and Matsuoka-san, who played Yakuneko, listened to my interruption before continuing the scene. Normally, that would have been a blooper for me, but it worked as a scene, so it was approved. I was happy with the direction that approved it, and I was impressed by Matsuoka-san's skill. That was amazing!

Q:
What was the atmosphere like during the voice recording sessions? Were there any memorable events?

Inada:
Things like the above happen quite often on the set of Yanineko. While the overall tone of the work seems to be driven by sheer energy and enthusiasm, I feel that in reality, the actors actually value subtle nuances in their performances. It's because they are capable actors that they can pull off even the most outrageous characters. The main cast of Yanineko are truly remarkable young women.

Q:
Are there any scenes from the recordings so far that were particularly memorable or that you'd like viewers to pay attention to?

Inada:
Actually, what I'd like you to pay attention to is the sound effects. Compared to other works, I think there are a lot of sounds that the actors themselves make. The sound of Yani Neko's fart is made by Natsuyoshi himself, and there's one scene where the landlord is portrayed in a way I've never done before in my 30+ year voice acting career, but I'll tell you about that after it airs. Also, sounds that don't exist in this world, like 'Snap!' and 'Sniff,' were made with my own voice. What's a sniff?! (laughs)

Q:
Please give a message to the fans who are looking forward to the broadcast.

Inada:
Well, that's how much fun we're having recording. We did talk about some serious things towards the end, but just forget about that and watch and laugh. This 'Yani Neko' might be the most controversial work of this season, no, this year, no, in the history of anime, so what kind of reaction will the public have? YES or NO? DEAD or ALIVE? Watch until the very end.

The anime 'Yanineko' will begin airing on TOKYO MX, BS11, and AT-X from July 2nd, 2026 (Thursday). It will also be available for streaming on Netflix and other platforms.
