Bunny DNS has eliminated query charges and is now free for up to 500 domains, with smart routing and monitoring also available at no extra cost.
Bunny, an edge platform provider offering CDN, video streaming, and storage services, has announced that it has eliminated query-based billing for its DNS service, 'Bunny DNS,' and will now offer free DNS hosting for up to 500 domains per account.
We're making Bunny DNS free
Bunny delivers content such as websites and videos from servers located around the world, providing a service that improves display speed by delivering data from a location closer to the user. DNS is the gateway that determines which location or server to direct users to, and it is deeply involved in the performance of the CDN, so Bunny has focused on DNS.
In 2022, Bunny announced its DNS service, 'Bunny DNS.' While the basic DNS service, which simply maps domain names to IP addresses, was free, the 'Scriptable DNS,' which allows users to control DNS responses with JavaScript, was charged on a per-query basis, similar to traditional DNS providers.
With this update, Bunny DNS now offers not only standard DNS queries but also Scriptable DNS and health monitoring at no additional cost. You can manage up to 500 DNS zones for free, with no limit on the number of queries or per-request charges. While there is a minimum monthly fee of $1 (approximately 162 yen) to use Bunny itself, there are no additional charges based on DNS usage.
In addition to being free, Bunny positions its DNS as a gateway to other of its own services. When migrating from another DNS service, users can utilize an automatic scan that automatically reads commonly used record names and types to restore their DNS zone. A migration method using uploaded zone files in BIND format is also available.
In this announcement, Bunny DNS is introduced as a feature that enables the CDN to be activated via DNS records, as part of its integration with Bunny CDN and Bunny Shield. According to Bunny, a Pull Zone, which is the distribution setting for Bunny CDN, is created in the background, allowing traffic to be routed to Bunny's edge network. Furthermore, if you want to add attack countermeasures, you can enable Bunny Shield with '1-Click Security,' which allows common attack methods and DDoS attacks to be handled on the edge side.
The article also touches upon the improvements that have been made to Bunny DNS itself. These include dual-stack support for name resolution using both IPv4 and IPv6, DNSSEC to help detect DNS tampering, HTTPS and SVCB records to convey destination and connection method information via DNS, and TLSA records for certificate verification. In addition, features such as monitoring of A, AAAA, and CNAME records, weighted routing, routing based on region and latency, and automatic isolation in case of failure have been provided.
