Brave Origin is a browser developed for users who want Brave's ad-blocking and privacy features but don't need features like AI or VPN. A Nightly version was released in April 2026.

Brave Software explains that 'in typical free browsers, optional features such as AI capabilities, search, VPN, Brave Rewards, Brave Wallet, and Web3 domains are supported by subscriptions, partnerships, and privacy-focused advertising.' On the other hand, they received requests from users who did not need these features and wanted 'a browser without the extra features,' so they created Brave Origin.

Features that will be disabled or removed from Brave Origin include Leo AI, Brave News, Playlist, Brave Rewards, Brave Ads, Speedreader, Brave Talk, Tor, Brave VPN, Brave Wallet, Web3 domains, Wayback Machine, Web Discovery Project, and email aliases. Statistical features such as daily usage ping, crash logs, and Privacy-Protected Product Analytics (P3A) will also be removed.

Brave Origin will continue to offer ad and tracker blocking with Brave Shields, privacy protection, fast browsing, regular software updates including Chromium patches, and security and privacy improvements. Brian Bondi, CTO and co-founder of Brave, said of Brave Origin, 'It's a response to users who want a minimalist browser with the highest level of privacy and security protection.'

Brave Origin is a one-time purchase priced at $59.99 (approximately 9600 yen). One license allows you to use both the 'standalone version,' which is provided as a separate application, and the 'upgrade version,' which adds a feature management panel to your existing Brave. Brave Software explains that Brave Origin is available for free to Linux users, stating that 'some Linux distributions already offer Brave with a configuration similar to Origin, so we are making it free to provide a consistent experience across Linux.'

After purchasing Brave Origin, a purchase ID is issued, which can be applied to multiple devices, whether it's the standalone or upgrade version. According to Brave, there is no technical limit on the number of devices, but there is a monthly rate limit, and activation can be managed from the account management page.

The standalone version is provided for desktops and is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The upgrade version, on the other hand, can be applied to existing desktop and mobile Brave apps and is compatible with Brave 1.91 and later for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. In the standalone version, omitted features are removed during the build and compilation process. Therefore, instead of simply hiding features in the settings, it results in a smaller browser with unnecessary features removed from the executable file itself.

When upgrading an existing Brave system to Brave Origin, a management panel for Brave Origin will be added to the settings screen. In this case, the relevant features will be turned off by default, and users can turn them on or off as needed.

Brave Software explains that 'many features can be hidden or disabled even in the free version of Brave.' However, hiding features in the free version does not remove them from the build like the standalone Brave Origin does, so the executable file size will not be reduced.

Regarding how they manage licenses while maintaining user privacy, Brave Software explains that they 'use a blind token protocol based on Privacy Pass .' This allows browsers to verify that a valid Brave Origin purchase exists, but Brave states that it does not link users' payment information to their usage.

If you purchased Brave Origin but wish to discontinue using it, you can contact support within 30 days of purchase for a full refund. Additionally, Brave Origin for iPhone and iPad is expected to be available at the same time as the release of Brave 1.91 for iOS, which is about 1-2 weeks after the release of Brave 1.91 for Android and desktop.

The standard version of Brave will continue to be offered for free, with ongoing feature additions and updates. Brave Origin is not intended to replace the standard version, but rather as an option for users who do not need AI, VPN, or Web3-related features, allowing them to support Brave's development by purchasing only the core ad-blocking and privacy protection features of Brave.
