Pizza Hut Franchisee Sues Over AI Delivery System, Alleges $100 Million in Damages

Yum! Brands is a giant fast-food company that owns Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell, and others. In 2021, it acquired Dragontail, an AI-based kitchen technology company. Since then, Yum! Brands has claimed that Dragontail is effective in improving store operations, delivery efficiency, and customer satisfaction scores for its pizza chains and other businesses, and has been urging its subsidiaries to use Dragontail.
However, Chuck Pizza Northeast, a Pizza Hut franchisee, claims that being forced to implement the Dragon Tail AI delivery system backfired. They filed a lawsuit against Pizza Hut, alleging that they suffered more than $100 million in damages due to being forced to use Dragon Tail.

Chuck Pizza Northeast operates over 100 Pizza Hut locations in the northeastern United States, including New York, New Jersey, and Maryland. Prior to the introduction of Dragon Tail, they had their own contract with the food delivery service DoorDash, and managers manually entered orders into DoorDash tablets.
However, at the time of writing, Pizza Hut has contracts with nationwide food delivery companies and is forcing its franchisees to use Dragon Tail's AI delivery system. Chuck Pizza Northeast claims that the introduction of Dragon Tail's AI system has caused delivery delays and that proper training for managers has not been provided by Dragon Tail.
In its lawsuit, Chuck Pizza Northeast stated, 'The use of Dragon Tail resulted in delivery delays, temperature drops in products (due to delays), and decreased customer satisfaction. Specifically, rack waiting times increased from less than 5 minutes to up to 20 minutes, and delivery times increased significantly from 30 minutes to over 45 minutes. Only about 50% of orders were delivered within 30 minutes.'
According to Chuck Pizza Northeast, the main problem is that the introduction of DragonTail allows drivers to see real-time order status and workflow. Some drivers have taken advantage of this information to wait for additional orders to accumulate in the same area instead of immediately delivering finished pizzas, leaving the pizzas unattended. This is causing delays in delivery times.
Prior to the introduction of Dragon Tail, Chuck Pizza Northeast recorded a year-over-year sales growth rate of '+10.19%', but after its introduction, it has been reported to have fallen sharply to '-9.78%'.
Chuck Pizza Northeast stated, 'Before the full implementation of Dragon Tail, Chuck Pizza Northeast recorded double-digit sales growth, outperforming almost all Pizza Hut franchise locations and far exceeding the brand average from early 2020 to early 2024. After the introduction of Dragon Tail, Chuck Pizza Northeast's performance fell significantly below the system average. After a recent analysis of business operations and variables to assess the unexpected sharp decline in performance, we discovered that Dragon Tail, which had been the only major change to our business since we were a top performer, was the cause of the decline.'

Chuck Pizza Northeast is seeking more than $100 million in damages from Pizza Hut, as well as compensation for legal fees and interest.
This lawsuit was filed as Pizza Hut was in dire straits. Pizza Hut had been struggling with declining sales due to increased competition, and Yum! Brands had announced in November 2025 that it was considering selling Pizza Hut.
