This lawsuit was filed by the Breathitt County School District, which manages Breathitt County in Kentucky, USA. A school district is similar to a board of education or school district in Japan, and is responsible for managing schools in a specific area.

The Breathitt County School District had argued that social media was disrupting students' learning environments, causing mental health crises, and that school budgets were being strained to deal with the issue.

The settlement terms for this lawsuit have not been made public as of the time of writing. Furthermore, Meta has not yet reached a settlement and continues to face legal action. This lawsuit is seen as a 'litmus test' for the more than 1,000 similar lawsuits filed across the United States.

It should be noted that Snap and TikTok had already reached a settlement in a separate lawsuit prior to this one. In that case, a 19-year-old plaintiff claimed to have suffered significant personal harm due to a highly addictive social media app. In that lawsuit, Google, which operates YouTube, and Meta, which operates Instagram, refused to settle, and the case ultimately went to trial, where a jury ordered them to pay $6 million (approximately 950 million yen) in damages.

In addition, Meta lost another lawsuit filed by the Attorney General of New Mexico alleging that its platform had a negative impact on the mental health of young people, and was ordered to pay approximately $375 million (approximately 59 billion yen).

These lawsuits not only seek monetary compensation, but also demand significant design changes to social media apps to mitigate their negative impact on minors. States like New Mexico are particularly pushing for stricter restrictions to protect minors.

Furthermore, some believe this is just the beginning of a wave of lawsuits against social media companies. According to Bloomberg, a representative for the Breathitt County School District stated that they will continue to pursue legal remedies for the remaining 1,200 school districts that have filed lawsuits.
