AI chat is now being used not only for gathering information, but also for asking about personal and sensitive topics such as health, loans, and career advice. Incognito Chat is positioned as a new mode for conducting such consultations in a way that is not visible to others.

According to Meta, Incognito Chat is based on WhatsApp's 'Private Processing' technology, where messages are processed in a secure environment. This processing environment is said to be inaccessible even to Meta, conversations are not saved, and messages are designed to disappear by default.

In a post on Threads, CEO Mark Zuckerberg described Incognito Chat as 'the first major AI product that does not store conversation logs on its servers.' He further stated that AI inference runs in a Trusted Execution Environment , and that conversations on the device disappear when the user ends the session.

Meta claims that while other companies' AI services also have features similar to secret mode or temporary chat, the service provider may be able to see the questions and answers. According to the IT news site The Verge, Google's Gemini temporary chats are retained for up to 72 hours, ChatGPT's temporary chats for up to 30 days, and Claude's secret chats for at least 30 days.

Meta is promoting Incognito Chat not merely as a 'mode that doesn't leave a history,' but as a mechanism that makes the interaction with the AI itself invisible even to the operators. Zuckerberg has also stated that in order to make the most of personal superintelligence, there needs to be a way to handle sensitive topics without anyone being able to access them.

Meta also plans to introduce 'Sidechat' on WhatsApp in the coming months. This feature will not interfere with normal WhatsApp conversations, but will allow Meta AI to provide private assistance based on the context of the conversation, and will also be protected by Private Processing.
