According to the announcement, Sony and TSMC will establish a joint venture in which Sony will hold a majority stake, and will set up development and manufacturing lines within Sony's newly constructed factory in Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. This partnership is said to be part of a broader collaboration aimed at improving the performance of image sensors, combining Sony's expertise in image sensor design with TSMC's process technology and manufacturing capabilities.

In addition to Sony's new investment in its existing factory in Nagasaki, the two companies are also discussing the possibility of investment through a joint venture. This investment would be implemented in stages according to market demand and is being considered with the premise of receiving support from the Japanese government. Furthermore, they plan to explore and address new opportunities in 'physical AI' in areas such as automobiles and robotics.

It has been reported that this partnership is a non-binding agreement.

Shinji Sashida, CEO of Sony Semiconductor Solutions, said, 'We are very encouraged that we have reached an agreement to take our partnership to a new stage, based on the trust we have cultivated through our long-standing collaboration with TSMC.'

Kevin Zhang, Senior Vice President at TSMC, said, 'Sony is a long-standing partner of TSMC in the CMOS image sensor business. We are delighted to take our collaboration to the next level as an important step in leading next-generation sensing technologies in the age of AI. This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment and vision to deliver industry-leading sensing technologies and products by leveraging cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions. We look forward to working closely together to deliver tangible results and lasting value to all stakeholders.'

Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Semiconductor Solutions and responsible for semiconductor manufacturing, is headquartered in Kikuyo-machi, Kikuchi-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture. TSMC built its factory in Kikuyo-machi with approximately 400 billion yen in subsidies from the Japanese government.

Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer TSMC's Kumamoto plant is finally complete, and the Japanese government has decided to provide approximately 730 billion yen in subsidies for the construction of a second plant - GIGAZINE
