Handara has released a sample of more than 300 emails along with a photograph of Patel. Reuters, which has reviewed the emails, reports that they contain a mix of personal and professional correspondence exchanged between 2010 and 2019.

Reuters was unable to verify the authenticity of the email, but confirmed that Patel's address matched an address previously identified in a data breach related to the dark web information company District 4 Labs.

An FBI spokesperson said, 'The FBI is aware of malicious actors targeting Director Patel's personal emails and is taking all necessary steps to mitigate the potential risks associated with this activity. The information in question is historical and does not contain any government information.'

The FBI also offered a reward of up to $10 million (approximately 1.597 billion yen) for information leading to the Handara hackers.

Handara has released images and a statement claiming responsibility for the attack on its official website and official Telegram channel, stating, 'Mr. Patel's name will be added to the list of victims who were successfully hacked,' and 'It will soon be revealed that the FBI's security was nothing but a joke.'

Handara also reported that 'the hacking of Patel was retaliation for the seizure of the domains.' On March 19, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that it had seized four domains as part of an ongoing effort to stop the hacking and cross-border repression schemes being carried out by the Ministry of Information and Security of the Islamic Republic of Iran (MOIS), at which time Patel stated that 'Iran used fake websites and online threats to instill fear in Americans and silence dissidents.'

According to Reuters, Handara opposes US support for Israel and launched cyberattacks after the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran in February 2026 , killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Handara stated, 'As loyal followers of Supreme Leader Khamenei, we declare war on all enemies of Islam in the Western world.'

The actual emails have been made public by Distributed Denial of Secrets, a non-profit organization that publishes, archives, and analyzes leaked and hacked datasets.
