The information that arXiv is becoming a non-profit organization came from a job advertisement posted by arXiv.
According to arXiv, the organization is separating from Cornell University, where it previously operated, and will begin operating as an independent non-profit organization in order to accelerate technological development, improve organizational flexibility, expand partnerships, and achieve long-term financial sustainability.
The job advertisement is for a CEO position, described as 'a role that oversees all aspects of arXiv, including strategic planning, financial management, technology infrastructure, human resources management, and stakeholder collaboration.' The estimated annual salary is $300,000 (approximately 48 million yen).
arXiv's annual budget is approximately $6 million (approximately 957 million yen), and it generates revenue from membership fees from universities, libraries, and research institutions, donations from affiliated organizations and partners such as professional societies, government agencies, and non-profit organizations, and funding from organizations and companies that benefit from arXiv's services.
Greg Morissette of Cornell Tech, the research arm of Cornell University that runs arXiv, said, 'By becoming a non-profit organization, arXiv will be able to raise funds from a wider range of donors and invest in the personnel and technology that will support the rapidly growing number of preprints.'
Furthermore, it will become easier to address challenges such as dealing with low-quality or fraudulent posts generated by AI, so-called 'AI slops.' While some researchers on social media are concerned about the possibility of arXiv being commercialized in the future, Morissette emphasizes that 'at least for the time being, there will be no major changes, and the goal is to maintain what is not broken.'
arXiv has experienced accelerated growth in recent years, with a surge in AI-related papers contributing to a 50% increase in submissions since 2022. This has placed a financial burden on arXiv, resulting in a deficit of $297,000 (approximately 47 million yen) in 2025. Cornell University had been supporting arXiv by subsidizing this deficit, but competition with other funding needs within the university and concerns that the university's influence might be too strong led to the decision that independence was the best option.
This policy has also been advocated by the service's founder, Paul Ginsperg, for some time. On social media, some scientists have expressed concern that the $300,000 salary is too high, and there are fears that the platform may eventually be acquired by a for-profit company due to financial pressure. Ginsperg acknowledged that he understood these concerns, but emphasized that arXiv operates on an extremely low budget and that achieving long-term sustainability has always been a concern.
