Microsoft announces AI-powered health information feature 'Copilot Health,' but includes a warning that it 'cannot be used as a substitute for medical advice.'

Microsoft has announced ' Copilot Health, ' a tool that compiles information obtained from medical records and wearable devices to provide advice to users.

Copilot Health brings together and organizes a user's medical records, information from wearable devices, and health history in one place.
In introducing Copilot Health, Microsoft stated, 'What most people need isn't more information, but help understanding the information they already have.' They added, 'Copilot Health isn't meant to replace your doctor. It makes your doctor-patient visits more valuable. It helps you approach appointments with the confidence that comes from asking the right questions, understanding the right context, and having a better understanding of your own body.'
For example, if someone is having disrupted sleep, an informed conversation could lead to a better understanding instead of constantly searching for symptoms.

However, Microsoft states that 'Copilot Health is not intended to diagnose, treat, or prevent any disease or other condition, and is not a substitute for professional medical advice,' emphasizing that its purpose is solely to enhance understanding of information. Furthermore, there is a possibility of hallucinations, a problem inherent in generative AI, so it should not be believed without question.
To improve the quality and reliability of Copilot Health's answers, Microsoft designed it to prioritize information from healthcare organizations across 50 countries, and answers include clear citations and easy links to source material.

Copilot Health is offered as a 'dedicated space' distinct from other chats, and is stored under additional access control, privacy protection, and security measures. Copilot Health data is protected by industry-leading security measures, including encryption at rest and during transmission, strict access control, and the ability to manage and delete information as needed. Connections to electronic medical records and wearable devices can be instantly disconnected at any time, and it is explained that information within Copilot Health is not used for model training.
Copilot Health will initially be available in English to adults aged 18 and over in the U.S. Microsoft is developing additional languages and voice options, and will announce additional regions and features as they become available.
