Netflix has announced that it has acquired InterPositive, an AI startup founded in 2022 by Ben Affleck, one of the actors known for playing Batman. All staff will remain with Netflix, and Affleck will continue to be involved as a senior advisor.

According to Netflix, InterPositive's concept of 'using emerging technologies to protect and expand creative options' aligned with Netflix's policy that 'innovation should serve the storytelling and creative process.'

InterPositive is an AI startup, but rather than generating images or videos based on input prompts, it offers an AI toolkit that can be used in post-production to adjust mix and color, complement shots, correct improper lighting, and add visual effects.

'These new tools will not limit or replace the work of writers, directors, actors or other crew members, but rather expand their creative freedom,' said Bela Bajaria, Netflix's chief content officer.

Going forward, Netflix will likely offer access to InterPositive's tools to creative partners, but there are no plans to make the tools commercially available.

In 2022, Affleck, founder of InterPositive, closely observed the rise of AI and, as a filmmaker, felt that 'current AI is insufficient' and 'to utilize AI in the creation of the stories that are the lifeblood of filmmaking, we need AI built specifically for the nuances and challenges of filmmaking.' He founded the company to fulfill his responsibility to protect the film industry, his colleagues, and human creativity and creators. He added, 'I'm thrilled to continue working with the Netflix team. I look forward to sharing what we're building and the future we're aiming for together with the broader creative community.'

As part of the acquisition, all 16 InterPosivite engineers and researchers will join Netflix, and Affleck will continue to contribute as a senior advisor.
