Access to developer database service 'Supabase' restricted in India, Indian government involvement

Supabase , an open-source Postgres development platform, has been blocked in India. Sources familiar with the matter say the blockage was due to a government order.

According to sources contacted by TechCrunch, Supabase has been blocked under Indian law, which previously blocked Twitter and TikTok . The government is apparently asking providers to block Supabase.

The government has not commented on Supabase, and it is unclear how long the restrictions will last.

Supabase acknowledged the situation in India on its official X account, urging users to 'use an alternative DNS provider or VPN as a workaround in the meantime.'

We understand many users in India continue to be blocked from accessing Supabase. We acknowledge the difficulties this is causing for our users there. Supabase continues to follow up through all available channels to resolve this issue.

TechCrunch has confirmed that access has been blocked in New Delhi via providers such as ACT Fibernet, JioFiber, and Airtel, but in Bengaluru, access is available via ACT Fibernet, suggesting the restrictions are inconsistent.

'If you're using JioFiber, you may need to connect to Supabase using a VPN or switch your DNS to 1.1.1.1,' Supabase said. 'We've received reports that other ISPs in India may also be affected by the restrictions. We continue to work through all available channels to resolve this issue.'

Supabase infrastructure remains fully operational - the issue appears to be an ISP-level block. We have reached out to Jio.

Following the access shutdown, a service called JioBase was launched to route Supabase API traffic through Cloudflare's edge network, making it available again.

Indian developers said, 'We are no longer seeing new user registrations from India,' and 'We can no longer reliably access Supabase for either development or production purposes.'

My current company also has their db on supabase. How am I suppose to work with it now without VPN? This isn't the way you suddenly do this type of this.

Supabase tagged India's IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and asked her to intervene and restore access, but the message has since been deleted.

US-based CEO Paul Copplestone had not yet issued a statement at the time of writing.

According to data from Similarweb, India is Supabase's fourth-largest source of traffic globally, accounting for approximately 9% of total global visits.
