Artists and other Pinterest users are complaining that AI moderation, AI-generated art, and AI features have made the platform worse.

Pinterest , the number of posts using generative AI has increased, and there have been reports of harmless photos being flagged due to the introduction of AI into moderators. Some have said that 'AI has worsened the quality of Pinterest.'

In recent years, it has become possible to generate high-quality images and videos using generative AI, and a large amount of AI-generated content has been posted to Pinterest. Pinterest has previously stated, 'The emergence of generative AI tools has helped many people increase their creativity and inspiration. At the same time, these tools are just getting started, and we've heard from some users that they want more transparency and control over the AI-generated content they see on Pinterest.' Rather than banning AI-generated images, the company is adopting a policy that gives users control by labeling them to indicate that AI was used, and by introducing a feature that allows users to control whether or not to display AI-generated content by genre .

Tiana Olegria, an artist who uses Pinterest, told 404 Media that the impact of AI isn't just AI images, but also the terrible AI moderation that has led to constant complaints from the user community. Olegria posts a variety of photos on her Pinterest account as reference material for her work, but since late 2025, she's noticed an increasing number of seemingly harmless photos being flagged by moderation, such as a stock photo of a man pointing a gun at a phone being flagged as 'self-harm' and a photo of two clothed women embracing intimately being removed.

Works that have been flagged or removed by moderation can be re-displayed by appealing, but this takes time and effort, and appeals are not always accepted. In the worst case, your account may be suspended.

On Reddit, many people have complained about similar AI moderation practices on Pinterest. One February 2026 post described the issue : 'I create 100% hand-drawn illustrations and clearly label my work as hand-drawn. However, Pinterest keeps automatically adding the 'AI-modified image' label to my pins. Every time I appeal, Pinterest removes the label, but this happens every time I post a new piece.' Artist Min Zakuga, speaking to 404 Media, similarly complained that his work, published before the widespread use of image-generating technology, was labeled as 'AI-modified' and that he was required to go through a lengthy process to prove that he didn't use AI.

Some users point out that the reason for the deterioration in moderation is that 'Pinterest has replaced human moderators with AI to check for problematic content, resulting in worsening judgments not only of AI-related labels but also of copyright infringement and pornography restrictions.' In fact, Pinterest laid off 15% of its employees in January 2026 as part of its AI promotion, and an internal email released by a former employee stated, 'We are reallocating resources to a team dedicated to AI and prioritizing AI-powered products and features.'

In addition, Pinterest CEO Bill Ready wrote in a Fortune column in January 2026, 'At Pinterest, we're transforming social media by embracing AI. Instead of relying on outrage to drive engagement, we're using AI to proactively promote happiness. Social media platforms like Pinterest will succeed or fail based on users' willingness to share creative and original ideas.' He made clear his company's proactive stance toward AI.

Several artists interviewed by 404 Media lamented the deterioration of Pinterest, a platform that had been useful for portfolios and resource collections, and said they had deleted their accounts in opposition to the platform's AI-driven policies.
