In 2023, a California woman known by her initials 'KGM' filed a lawsuit against Meta, YouTube, Snap (Snapchat), and TikTok. KGM, 20 years old at the time of writing, claims that her use of Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Snapchat since childhood has led to body dysmorphic disorder, depression, and self-destructive thoughts.

The lawsuit focuses not on the platform's lack of moderation of harmful content, but on the mechanisms by which the platform promotes engagement. The plaintiffs argue that tools like infinite scrolling, autoplaying videos, and algorithmic recommendations create a gambling-like feedback loop. They accuse management of being aware of these negative effects but ignoring them in order to maximize users' time on the platform.

At the time of writing, TikTok and Snap have already settled with the plaintiffs.

In court, Judge Carolyn Kuhl reprimanded the Meta team for wearing and using the smart glasses, pointing out that the use of facial recognition technology to verify juror identities is prohibited, and ordered the AI-enabled smart glasses to be removed immediately in the courtroom.

Judge Kuhl also pointed out that audio and video recordings are prohibited in the courtroom, warning, 'If you are recording anything, you must delete it or you will be found in contempt of court.'

It's unclear whether the Meta team wore the smart glasses in court before being warned, or whether they removed them while in court.
