Steam will revise its AI disclosure guidelines, which indicate whether or not a game uses AI, and will no longer require developers to disclose the use of AI tools in game development.

Simon Carless, founder of GameDiscoverCo , a market research firm for the games industry, points out that Valve, the company that runs Steam, has significantly rewritten its developer disclosure form, eliminating the need to disclose the use of AI tools in game development.

Significantly, PC video game platform Steam significantly just rewrote - but did NOT remove - its 'does your game have AI in it?' dev disclosure form. The headline is that Valve's making it clearer… | Simon Carless | 34 comments

Valve Updates AI Disclosure Guidelines To Allow For AI-Powered Tools - GameSpot

Valve, the company behind Steam, has revised its AI disclosure guidelines, stating that developers no longer need to disclose the use of AI tools, such as code helpers, to assist in game development. Valve explained that the AI disclosure guidelines 'mean that developers must inform players when AI is used to generate content, from marketing and concept assets to in-game content that players interact with,' and that this is separate from the use of AI in development.

Game developers can specify generated assets and decide whether players will

interact with AI-generated content (images, sounds, and other content) during gameplay with a single checkbox.

Valve introduced its AI Disclosure Guidelines in 2024, when the use of generative AI in game development began to increase. This is the first time Valve has revised its AI Disclosure Guidelines since then. While there are thousands of games on Steam that disclose their use of AI, the policy remains voluntary and is not enforced by Valve's moderation.

As a result, many developers may choose to omit disclosures about their use of AI on their store pages, according to GameSpot, which also noted that Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, the company behind the Epic Games Store, believes such disclosures 'make no sense.'

Even in 2026, the use of AI remains a hot topic in the gaming industry, with the use of AI-generated audio in ARC Raiders being widely discussed .

Meanwhile, Larian Studios, the developer of ' Baldur's Gate 3, ' came under fire after its CEO suggested that the company would use AI-generated technology in the planning stages of its next game, 'Divinity.' Larian has since stated that it will no longer use AI-generated technology.

Although only 7% of games distributed on Steam publicly disclose the use of generative AI, it has been revealed that at least 20% of titles released in 2025 will use generative AI.

7,818 games on Steam publicly announce the use of generative AI, accounting for 7% of the total, and at least 20% of titles released in 2025 will use generative AI - GIGAZINE
