Astro is a framework that accelerates web page rendering by performing server-side rendering. Development of Astro began in 2021, and at the time of writing, it is used by major global companies such as Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and VISA.

Cloudflare is building a high-speed content delivery network, and Astro is developing a high-speed web framework. Astro CEO Fred Schott and Cloudflare CTO Dane Knecht have been discussing the future of the web since around 2025, and they realized they were working toward a common vision: that content will remain at the center of web technology, even as it evolves.
'Working with Cloudflare will allow us to focus 100% on developing code and not spend time on monetizing Astro,' said Schott.
At the time of writing, beta testing of Astro 6 is underway. Astro is being developed as an open source project under the MIT License and has stated that it will continue to maintain the MIT License.
