Tailwind CSS is an open-source CSS framework widely used in web development. However, in recent years, its profits have been declining, leading to the layoff of 75% of its engineering team. The development team has shifted its focus to prioritize profitable changes, and on January 7, 2026, a pull request for a feature to improve the readability of Tailwind CSS documentation for large-scale language models (LLMs) was rejected for lack of profitability, leading to widespread public outcry that Tailwind CSS was in a precarious financial position.

Meanwhile, on January 9, 2026 (Japan time), Logan Kilpatrick, product manager at Google AI Studio, posted on X that 'Google AI Studio has become a sponsor of the Tailwind CSS project,' revealing that the company has begun financial support for Tailwind CSS.

In addition to Google AI Studio, other sponsors include backend platform Supabase , payment service Gumroad , and developer podcast Syntax . Adam Wasan, developer of Tailwind CSS, expressed his gratitude, saying, 'We've been overwhelmed by the support over the past 24 hours.' He added, 'While our situation is declining, I want to make it clear that we remain a strong business. It's just not as great as it used to be. We've had to make some truly heartbreaking changes, but we're stable at our new organizational size.' He emphasized that the company is in a stable state following layoffs and other changes.

Tailwind CSS is seeking support from individuals and organizations on its sponsorship page . Individuals can donate up to $120 (approximately 19,000 yen) per year.

Organizations can choose to donate $500, $2,500, or $5,000 per month.
