Elon Musk predicts mass production of brain-computer interfaces at brain implant company Neuralink

Neuralink, a startup developing brain-computer interface (BCI) devices that connect the brain to machines, has announced that it will begin mass production of its BCI devices.

Neuralink's BCI is a brain-implanted device that uses 1,024 electrodes attached to 64 ultra-fine threads. The electrodes read the activity of neurons in the brain and relay it to a computer.

Neuralink has successfully completed its first human clinical trials in the United States, and has released footage of patients with limb paralysis playing games simply by thinking.

Clinical trials began in the UK in 2025.

On January 1, 2026, Neuralink co-founder Elon Musk posted, 'Neuralink will begin mass production of BCI devices and transition to streamlined, nearly fully automated surgery in 2026.' This indicates that Neuralink is planning to move from limited clinical trials to mass production.

Musk also spoke about the future outlook, saying, 'Neuralink will help bridge communication from the cerebral cortex across damaged nerves in the neck and spine. From a physics perspective, it will physically restore function throughout the body.'

Neuralink raised $650 million in funding in June 2025 and revealed in September that it had implanted BCI devices in 12 patients.

In addition, 'Blindsight,' which is being developed with the aim of restoring vision to people who have lost the optic nerve in both eyes, received 'breakthrough device' designation from the Food and Drug Administration in September 2024. Neuralink also plans to begin mass production of this device within 2026.
