The Goddard Space Flight Center library was a facility primarily used by NASA staff and researchers, and was NASA's largest library, housing hundreds to thousands of valuable books, including records of early space missions by the Soviet Union and mission design documents that had only been distributed in small numbers.

The library will close as part of a consolidation plan approved in 2022. Book lending will end on December 9, 2025, and the common areas where materials were available will close on January 2, 2026.

Some library functions have been relocated to another building, but reference services will continue to be available. Library staff will conduct a 60-day inventory review to determine which materials will remain in use and which will be treated differently.

The New York Times reported that 'the facility closure is part of a larger reorganization by the Trump administration, and officials said the remaining books will be destroyed,' but NASA Administrator Jared Isaac countered, saying, 'The closure is part of a long-term facility consolidation plan approved in 2022 under the previous administration, and the books will be carefully digitized, transferred to other libraries, or preserved for historical purposes.'

Closing the facility is expected to save the company $10 million annually.
