Mattermost is a self-hosted tool with an entry level plan for those who want a free basic experience.

However, with the update of Mattermost version 11 and later, the entry plan now limits the number of messages you can view to 10,000. If you want to remove this limit, you have no choice but to switch to a paid plan.

This change was heavily criticized because it imposed restrictions on self-hosted environments.

Users can switch to the free Team plan, which allows them to fully view their past history. However, the Team plan does not support SSO (single sign-on) and is limited to 250 users. This means that users with medium to large-scale accounts are frustrated because they cannot use this workaround.

'Mattermost owes its success to the open source community. So what happens when they completely abandon that community and charge for something that should be free? Will that truly differentiate them from the big players like Slack, Teams, Matrix, and Rocket Chat? This tool always talks about security, but it lacks basic encryption that other apps have had for a long time. If they forget why they were successful in the first place, Mattermost will fade into history faster than they can imagine. It's time to seriously consider their position in the market.'
