WikiFlix compiles over 4,000 public domain films from Wikimedia Commons, the Internet Archive, and YouTube.

Public domain content is content that has become freely available to anyone because the protection period for intellectual property rights, such as copyright, has expired or the rights holder has abandoned the rights. Much of this content is stored on

When you access WikiFlix, you'll see a list of movie titles and thumbnails that are publicly available on Wikimedia Commons, the Internet Archive, and YouTube. This time, I clicked on the thumbnail for 'Battleship Potemkin,' which was listed in the 'Highly Ranked (# Wikipedia Article)' column.

The title of the work, an image, and a description of the work are displayed. Below the title are play buttons for Wikimedia Commons, the Internet Archive, and YouTube. This time, I clicked the link button to Wikimedia Commons on the far left.

Then the movie started playing on the WikiFlix page.

For YouTube, an embedded YouTube player will be displayed.

There is also a section for cast and staff at the bottom of the work page. If you are interested in a particular cast member or director, you can search for other works by that cast member or director.

You can also search by keyword in the search box at the top right. This time, I entered 'Chaplin' in the search box.

Three people were found. Click on 'Charlie

Then, public domain films directed and starring Chaplin became hits.

WikiFlix is a project run by Wikipedia volunteers, hosting over 4,000 movies that are in the public domain. The staff states that 'WikiFlix is focused on entertainment,' and they clearly state that they curate the works they host.
