NVIDIA, Oracle, and the Department of Energy announce plans to develop AI supercomputers 'Solstice' and 'Equinox'; Solstice will feature 100,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs

NVIDIA and Oracle announced plans to build the Department of Energy's largest AI supercomputer in its history, in an effort to revolutionize scientific discovery.

One of the AI supercomputers being developed as part of this plan is Solstice, which will be equipped with 100,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs and will support the DOE's mission of 'developing AI capabilities to advance American technological leadership in national security, science, and energy.'

The other AI supercomputer, 'Equinox,' will be equipped with 10,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs and is scheduled to be available in the first half of 2026. The two systems will be interconnected via the NVIDIA network and will deliver a combined AI performance of 2,200 EFLOPS .

Solstice and Equinox will be deployed at Argonne National Laboratory , a DOE national laboratory. Scientists and researchers can develop and train new frontier models for open science and AI inference models using NVIDIA Megatron-Core , an open-source library for training AI models, and extend it with NVIDIA TensorRT, an ecosystem of tools for deep learning inference. These models will serve as the foundation for agent-based AI workflows for scientific discovery.



Solstice and Equinox will support research collaboration between NVIDIA, DOE, and Argonne National Laboratory to help develop scientists. NVIDIA claimed this will increase R&D productivity and accelerate publicly funded discoveries over the next decade. Solstice will build on the DOE's new public-private partnership model, which includes industry investments and use cases. This reflects the Trump Administration's commitment to ensuring American leadership in AI and science.

'The systems will seamlessly connect with DOE's cutting-edge experimental facilities, including the Advanced Synchrotron Radiation System (APS), enabling scientists to address some of America's most pressing challenges through scientific discovery.'
