In December 2023, Ubisoft announced that The Crew would be shutting down after nine years since its release. This means that The Crew will be removed from all online game stores and online play will no longer be possible on March 31, 2024.
Many users have rebelled against this measure, and a campaign called 'Stop Killing Games' led by YouTuber Ross Scott has criticized the practice of game makers terminating the service of games that have already been sold to players, making them unplayable. The campaign is petitioning European Union (EU) regulators to require game makers to keep their games playable even after online services are terminated.

In addition, two California users have filed a lawsuit against Ubisoft, alleging that 'Ubisoft misled players into believing they had purchased the game when in fact they had merely acquired a license, even though they had purchased a physical disc,' and that 'Ubisoft misrepresented that The Crew's data files were on the disc and could be freely accessed, and that the disc was not merely a key to play the game.'

In response, Ubisoft's lawyers said, 'The plaintiffs allege eight counts of misleading advertising, unfair competition, and consumer legal remedies law, common law fraud, and breach of warranty, even though Ubisoft terminated The Crew service with proper notice. Even when players purchase The Crew, they are merely purchasing a limited access license to the game. These inappropriate arguments have caused a lot of damages.' Ubisoft has also filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit in California court.
The plaintiffs, on the other hand, claim that 'the paid credits available for The Crew meet all the requirements to be considered gift cards' and add the allegation that 'Ubisoft violated the rules regarding the sale of gift cards.' In California, gift cards do not have an expiration date. Therefore, the plaintiffs argue that Ubisoft broke this rule by making the paid credits unusable when it shut down The Crew.
As a result of this amended complaint, Ubisoft has until April 29, 2025 to respond, including by filing a response with the court.
