Mysterious whirlpools spotted in night sky in Europe, blamed on SpaceX rocket
At around 7:50 p.m. on March 24, 2025, a swirl of light appeared, illuminating the night sky across Europe. According to the UK Met Office, the strange swirl was caused by SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, which was launched on the same day.

Similar vortices have been observed in several countries, including Russia, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, France and Denmark.

Lord Dover, senior technical officer at the Bayfordbury Observatory at Hartforger University, said the spiral was observed for around 10 minutes from 7.52pm, moving across the sky before sinking below the horizon.
The Met Office said in a statement: 'We have received numerous reports of a whirlpool illuminating the night sky this evening. This is most likely caused by the SpaceX Falcon 9 which launched earlier today.'

In fact, SpaceX is scheduled to launch the Falcon 9 mission 'NROL-69' on March 24, 2025.

The Falcon 9, which was launched from the Cape Canaveral Space Center in Florida, successfully landed at the landing site 'LZ-1' in Florida about 8 minutes and 26 seconds after launch.

Meteorologist Simon King said of the vortex, 'Before returning to Earth, Falcon 9 dumped fuel into the upper atmosphere to reduce weight. The fuel froze into crystals, which glowed brightly in the sunlight.' He explained that the frozen fuel crystals were the true identity of the vortex of light.

In addition, planetary scientist James O'Donoghue said the reason why the frozen fuel formed a spiral was because 'the rocket released the fuel as it rotated.'
Similar spirals have appeared before, being observed around the world in April 2022 , January 2024 , and March 2024 .
