A playable Vocaloid MV that combines Hatsune Miku with a shooting game, 'Q-SIDE / Hatsune Miku' play review

Kakakako 's work ' Q-SIDE / Hatsune Miku,' which was unveiled at the online participation event ' The VOCALOID Collection ~ 2025 Winter ' hosted by Dwango from Friday, February 21st to Monday, February 24th, 2025, was a hot topic for being 'a music video (MV) that is also a shooting game that you can play,' so I decided to try playing it.

You can play 'Q-SIDE / Hatsune Miku' in your web browser from the link below. It's free to play and no user registration is required.

You can see the actual gameplay of 'Q-SIDE / Hatsune Miku' in the video below.

I tried playing the shooting game 'Q-SIDE / Hatsune Miku' where the music and development match perfectly - YouTube

'Q-SIDE / Hatsune Miku' is designed with Unity and can be played from a browser. Controls are done with the keyboard. Press the space bar to start the game.

Hatsune Miku appears as an operator. The game is dotted with Hatsune Miku-inspired elements, such as the light blue UI, the green onion logo and 'NEG' icon, and the high score of '39000 (Miku).'

The story is about an attack by an unknown alien race called 'Q-sides' that has come from outer space, and the team boarding an orbital fighter plane called 'Proto' to intercept them.

Select 'Deploy' to start the game. The D-pad is for movement and 'Z' is for shooting. Although operation is not fully guaranteed, it is also possible to play with a gamepad.

Right from the sortie sequence, the music and visuals match up.

It's a vertical scrolling shooter where you defeat enemies that appear. The lyrics of the song are displayed as lines spoken by Hatsune Miku, the operator.

Power-up items such as shields and wide shots may appear during the game. In the scene where the wide shot item appears, the lyrics say 'To the end of the future that spreads with a wide shot,' and the content of the song and the development of the game matched perfectly.

As you play through the stages, you'll encounter some scenes and enemies that will make you think, 'Hey, have I seen this before?' if you're a fan of shooting games. This is a scene that reminds me of

Space Invaders . There's a UFO flying at the top, and if you shoot it down, you'll get a high score.

An enemy similar to the flying iron plate, Pacula, that appears in '

Xevious .'

Then, with the warning 'WARNING!', the mid-boss appears.

The mid-boss is a giant battleship. First, aim to destroy the armor in the center.

Once its armor is destroyed, it will spit out a large number of bullets, so keep attacking while dodging through them.

Defeat successful

Defeating a mid-boss changes the melody. This is a fast-paced stage, similar to that of the '

Gradius ' series, and you must be careful not to crash into passages or gates.

Once you get through the high-speed stage, you'll be confronted by a mother-like entity from Cueside, whose silhouette vaguely resembles the prototype you control.

The enemy transforms into a giant humanoid weapon and attacks by scattering a large number of bullets.

Lasers are also fired from time to time, and evasive action can be taken based on the trajectory that can be seen just before.

A shootout with extremely thick lasers ensues, accompanied by the lyrics, 'Connected to the ends of the future by laser beams.'

And finally, defeat it.

The staff roll will start.

Finally, your score will be displayed and the game will be cleared.

My impression after completing the game is that the melody and lyrics are in harmony with the game content, so I enjoyed experiencing both the game and the music. As a shooting game, it's not that difficult, but if you've played a variety of shooting games before, you'll be thinking, 'Huh? This seems to be based on that game...?' Personally, I felt that the content and presentation, where the game and music are in harmony, were a homage to Taito's shooting games. Since the enemy patterns and terrain are fixed, you can play it multiple times to find an efficient strategy or try to beat your high score.

In addition, by using the 'Muteki Mode' from the settings screen, even people who aren't good at shooting games can enjoy the music while playing the game.
