Humane's Ai Pin is a screenless wearable device that attracted attention for its demonstration of projecting images onto the palm of the hand, and was announced with great fanfare as the next generation of AI devices to replace smartphones. However, when it was released in April 2024, it was flooded with criticism and returns due to issues with battery life and heat generation, and it was reported that the company was considering selling itself just a little over a month after its release.

At the time, Humane was aiming to sell the business for $1 billion (approximately 152 billion yen), but in a press release on February 18, 2025, it announced that it would sell the majority of its shares to HP for $116 million (approximately 17.6 billion yen).
According to Humane's support document , Ai Pins that have already been purchased will continue to function normally until 12:00 PST on February 28. After the service ends, offline functions such as checking the remaining battery level will continue to be available, but most of the main functions, such as making and receiving calls and messages, AI functions, and cloud functions, will no longer be available because Ai Pin will no longer be connected to Humane's servers.
In addition, all data stored in the Humane Center will be deleted, so Ai Pin users must sync their devices via Wi-Fi by February 28th to download any photos, videos, and notes stored on the device.
Since March, Ai Pin has lost its communication function through Humane, and there are no trade-in or exchange programs or user support available. Humane said it 'recommends recycling Ai Pin through its e-waste recycling program.'
The sale to HP is expected to close at the end of February, and will see Humane's proprietary operating system, CosmOS, acquired by HP, its technical staff rehired by HP, and HP is expected to acquire over 300 of Humane's intellectual property rights, including patents.
'We've decided to shut down Ai Pin as we transition to new initiatives. We'll have more to share in the future. Thank you for your support,' Humane said in a consumer FAQ .
The team, which includes former Apple engineers and founders Imran Chaudhry and Bethany Bongiorno, will set up a new division within HP once Humane is merged with the company. The new team, called HP IQ, will lead efforts to bring AI to the company's PCs, printers and connected conference rooms.
