Blu-ray, which features large storage capacities of 25GB for single-layer and 50GB for dual-layer, competed fiercely for market share as the successor to DVD in the late 2000s, and has steadily increased its market share since Toshiba's withdrawal from the HD DVD business in 2008.
However, in recent years, the demand for Blu-ray has been declining with the spread of HDD recorders and video distribution services. To make matters worse, the presence of Blu-ray is fading, with South Korean home appliance giant LG Electronics ceasing production of Blu-ray players in December 2024.
On January 23, 2025, Sony announced that it would end production of all models of Blu-ray Disc Media, Recordable MiniDiscs, Recordable MD Data, and MiniDV Cassettes by February 2025.

In light of this situation, Verbatim stated, 'The domestic optical disc market is currently undergoing a major turning point, with some manufacturers withdrawing from manufacturing and sales businesses and other signs of a shrinking supply system. Verbatim will continue to work closely with I-O DATA to provide high-quality optical discs to the Japanese market, with stable supply as our top priority.'
Based in the United States, Verbatim sells Blu-ray discs , DVD-Rs, and other products through I-O DATA, its sole distributor in Japan, and offers a wide variety of optical disc products, including packs of 10 or 20 , and single- and dual-layer discs .
Additionally, Verbatim has announced a new product, an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive that also supports writing. 'With rigorous product quality control and a stable production system, Verbatim and I-O DATA will continue to play an important role in supporting the supply of optical discs in the Japanese market. Furthermore, by providing highly reliable recording media for data storage, we will meet our customers' needs and contribute to the development of the entire recording media market,' he said.
