Facebook bans Linux posts, community rebels, saying they've been treated like malware

We've seen Facebook ban posts about various Linux-related topics, sites, and groups, and we've seen reports of people getting their accounts locked for posting Linux content.

According to DistroWatch, a website that covers Linux-related content, many Linux-related posts have been deleted on Facebook since January 19, 2025.

One DistroWatch writer appealed the ban in response to community feedback, but received a response from a Facebook representative saying that Linux topics would continue to be included in the security filter.
DistroWatch writers were subsequently locked from their Facebook accounts. DistroWatch wrote, 'We've been hearing from readers that they can no longer post about Linux on Facebook or share links to DistroWatch. Some have reported that their accounts have been locked or restricted for posting about Linux. Ironically, Facebook runs much of its infrastructure on Linux and often posts job ads looking for Linux developers. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about it other than advise readers to get their Linux-related information elsewhere.'

On the other hand, there have been reports as of 2021 that links to DistroWatch have been removed for violating the guidelines, so it remains unclear what criteria Facebook uses to censor posts.
Facebook has announced that in January 2025, it will stop using independent fact-checking agencies and switch to a 'Community Notes' format where users can check each other's opinions to see if information is accurate.
