The Amazon Retail Ad Service allows retailers to place ads from Amazon's existing advertising customers on search results, product pages, and other areas of their websites. Amazon claims that it uses machine learning models trained on over 20 years of Amazon expertise and trillions of shopping records to deliver contextually relevant ads in the right place and at the right time.

In addition, the Amazon Retail Ad Service allows users to freely customize the design, placement, and number of ads displayed across the site, as well as use Amazon's advertising measurement and reporting tools. According to Amazon, the Amazon Retail Ad Service operates on a separate system from Amazon's online marketplace, and retailers manage their data through their own AWS accounts.

The Amazon Retail Ad Service is expected to allow Amazon to earn advertising revenue from ads that appear in its stores and while shopping online, even when no shopping is taking place on the site, as well as potentially gain access to more data.

According to Amazon, at the time of writing, the Amazon Retail Ad Service is only available to multi-brand retailers in the U.S. that offer e-commerce sites or apps. Early adopters of the Amazon Retail Ad Service include

iHerb , which sells health and wellness products, Asian food retailer Weee!, and Oriental Trading, which sells toys and party supplies.

'We designed the Amazon Retail Ad Service to be a win-win for retailers, advertisers and consumers, and we're excited to see how it will improve results, drive sales and enhance the shopping experience,' said Paula Despance, vice president, Amazon Ads Measurement.
