California has a law called Business and Professions Code 17602 , which was enacted to prevent companies from locking people into subscriptions after they have purchased the service or making it difficult to unsubscribe. Discord has been sued in California for violating Business and Professions Code 17602.
The lawsuit was filed on Dec. 17, 2024, and the complaint states that there are 'no conspicuously placed direct links or buttons' that users can click on.
On Tuesday, Discord was sued in a class action over its subscription practices.

California consumers say Discord violated state auto-renewal laws by making it too difficult to cancel: pic.twitter.com/HEcT1JVj4N
'Users must navigate to the 'Subscriptions' tab within their user settings and find a small 'Cancel' button. Once they click on that button, Discord presents the user with a series of prompts to click in order to cancel their subscription, including some that appear to be designed to convince the user not to cancel their subscription,' the lawsuit states.
Below is the 'Subscription' tab in the Discord settings. 'Nitro' is displayed flashily on the screen. The 'Switch Plans' button that allows you to change your Nitro plan is designed to stand out, but the 'Cancel' button is very inconspicuous.
Even if you hit the 'Cancel' button, Discord will try to keep you by offering you a 30% discount on Nitro.
The plaintiffs argued that far from being a 'timely and easy-to-use cancellation mechanism,' the move 'interferes with or delays consumers' ability to immediately cancel auto-renewing or recurring services' and is not a process that allows consumers to cancel without taking further steps.
The plaintiffs also argued that 'the existence of a tutorial on how to unsubscribe from Nitro illustrates how difficult it is to unsubscribe from Nitro.'
Discord has not officially responded to the class action lawsuit at the time of writing.
