Apple's earphones, AirPods, which were released in 2016, continue to evolve year by year, and in 2024 they were approved by the US Food and Drug Administration as the world's first commercially available hearing aid software device, making them suitable for use in a wide range of fields, including medical purposes.

As of 2023, Bloomberg estimates that AirPods will generate more than $18 billion in annual revenue. Considering that the replacement period for AirPods is about three years, sales could grow even more by 2024.

According to a Bloomberg survey, 62% of Americans in Gen Z (ages 18-24) own AirPods, compared with 47% of all age groups. In addition, while only about 40% of Americans own an iPhone and AirPods together, Bloomberg predicts that this figure could reach 60% by 2030.

According to a survey by technology media PCMag, AirPods' sales of $18 billion will exceed the total sales of Spotify ($14 billion) and Nintendo ($12 billion) as of 2023. PCMag also points out that many users are losing their AirPods and needing to replace them, with replacement costs alone reaching $700 million (about 100 billion yen).

Bloomberg predicted that 'due to increased sales, AirPods could surpass the iPad over the next decade and become the third most important Apple product after the iPhone and Mac.' Fewer users own iPads than AirPods, and a survey from the same year showed that 'only 36% of Americans of Gen Z own an iPad.'

Apple plans to release the third-generation AirPods Pro in 2025, which is expected to have a new design and improved noise management, and there are rumors that 'new AirPods' with an IR (infrared) sensor and features such as automatic volume adjustment when someone talks to you will be released by 2026.
