YouTube lets creators choose whether to allow third parties to train AI on their videos

YouTube announced on December 17, 2024 (Japan time) that creators will be able to choose whether or not to allow third-party companies to use their videos for AI training. This setting is off by default, but creators can change the setting themselves if they want to allow AI training by third-party companies such as Amazon, Meta, and OpenAI.

Many generative AIs are trained using all kinds of copyrighted content under the concept of ' fair use .' However, creators around the world are raising concerns about tech companies using copyrighted content without permission under the guise of fair use.

In a post on December 17, YouTube said it understands that creators want more control over the development of generative AI tools by third-party companies, and announced that in the coming days it will add a 'Third-party training' setting to YouTube Studio, allowing creators and rights holders to choose whether or not to allow AI models to be trained on their content.

This setting is off by default, so those who do not want to allow AI training do not need to do anything. In addition, the collection and use of content through unauthorized scraping is still prohibited, but Google itself has been using YouTube content for AI training for some time now.

According to technology media TechCrunch, the new settings allow users to choose which third-party companies they want to allow for AI training. Available companies include AI21 Labs, Adobe, Amazon, Anthropic, Apple, ByteDance, Cohere, IBM, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, Perplexity, Pika Labs, Runway, Stability AI, and xAI. A spokesperson said the reason these companies were selected was because they were 'likely to be wise choices for potential partnerships with creators.'

It has also been reported that YouTube is testing a new feature that allows some creators to reply to comments using their own voice.
