Apple Intelligence falsely reports that the murderer of a health insurance company CEO was a suicide, and the BBC strongly protests to Apple, claiming that the summary function of Apple Intelligence created false information
The BBC has filed a complaint against Apple, alleging that the Apple Intelligence news summary feature was generating false news, making it appear as if BBC News had reported the news incorrectly.

Starting December 11, 2024, Apple will begin offering its personal AI 'Apple Intelligence' in the UK. Apple Intelligence has a notification summary function that can summarize multiple notifications and combine them into one.
Apple Intelligence summarized the BBC News reports in a single notification sent to Apple users, stating that 'Luigi Mangione (who murdered Thompson) committed suicide.' However, the British public broadcaster BBC filed a complaint against Apple, stating that it had not published a news story with such a headline and that Mangione did not commit suicide.
Below is a notification from Apple Intelligence on an Apple device. The notification from BBC News correctly states that 'Luigi Mangione shoots himself.' The latest information on 'Syria's Assad regime' and 'South Korean President Yoon Seong-ryul' contained in the notification was accurate.
A BBC spokesperson said, 'We have contacted Apple to raise our concerns and to resolve the issue. 'BBC News is the world's most trusted news publisher. It is vital that our audience can trust all the information, journalism and notifications that are published under our name.' They also criticized Apple Intelligence for generating false information and disseminating it under the name of BBC News.
According to the BBC, Apple Intelligence's notification summary feature is not the only one to have given incorrect headlines to BBC News reports. On November 21, 2024, the notification combined three articles from The New York Times on different topics into one notification, in which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was described as 'Netanyahu arrested.' It should be noted that The New York Times did not report on the arrest of Prime Minister Netanyahu, but rather inaccurately summarized an article about the International Criminal Court (ICC) issuing an arrest warrant for Netanyahu , resulting in the inaccurate notification.
ProPublica reporter Ken Schwencke pointed out that Apple Intelligence had inaccurately summarized the New York Times report.

The BBC reported that it was unable to independently verify the 'inaccurate reporting notices from The New York Times generated by Apple Intelligence.' The BBC also reached out to The New York Times for comment, but the Times declined to comment.
Petros Iosifidis, a professor of media policy at City University , told BBC News that Apple Intelligence's notification summary feature was an 'embarrassing mistake.' He said, 'I understand that there is market pressure, but I'm surprised to see Apple putting its name on a product that is clearly not finished. There are certainly potential benefits to releasing the service as soon as possible, but the technology is not yet ready, and there is a risk that misinformation will be spread.' He pointed out that Apple ended up releasing an unfinished Apple Intelligence in the midst of competition with AI companies.
It has also been pointed out that Apple Intelligence sometimes produces irrelevant summaries for emails and text messages.
In addition, there are frequent reports of AI functions providing inaccurate summaries. Google's search AI has also given strange answers, such as 'glue is used to stick cheese to pizza.'
