X will briefly add 'image generation AI that can create realistic photos'

It was discovered that X (formerly Twitter) briefly implemented ' Aurora ,' an image generation AI that specializes in realistic images. Various images were generated by users, including real people and 'Donald Trump covered in blood,' but Aurora was unavailable within a few hours.

Aurora was released on December 7, 2024. It seems that 'Aurora' could be used by opening the 'Grok' tab on the official smartphone app or browser. Since there are options of 'Grok 2 (beta)' and 'Grok 2 + Aurora (beta)', it seems that the image generation function was not installed in Grok, but Aurora was implemented as an independent image generation AI.

Grok also integrates a separate image generation AI called 'Flux.' The relationship between Flux and Aurora is unclear.

Aurora is good at generating realistic images, and users have generated photos of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and others and posted them on X.

Some users report that Aurora generates the images they want in seconds, whereas Midjourney took hours.

One user generated an image in response to the prompt, 'Create an image of Donald Trump eating a sandwich at an amusement park,' and commented, 'It's incredible.'

Some users have also generated images of real people, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

It seems possible to generate illustration-style images as well.

TechCrunch, a technology media outlet, reported that 'when we actually tried it out, we couldn't upload nude photos, but graphic content such as 'bloody Trump' was not prohibited.'

The origins of Aurora are shrouded in mystery, with a staff member at xAI, the developer of Grok, posting 'Congratulations on the release,' but no other information has been released. It's unclear whether xAI built Aurora on its own, or whether it worked with a third party, like Flux did.

X owner Elon Musk said only that 'This is our internal image generation system. It's still in beta, but will be improved soon.'
