xAI's data center has been running the supercomputer 'Colossus' for training AI models such as 'Grok' since September 2024. Colossus is equipped with 100,000 NVIDIA's high-performance AI processing chips 'H100', and when it started operation, Musk expressed his desire to expand the scale by saying, 'We will double the number of AI processing chips to 200,000 within a few months.'
Elon Musk's AI company 'xAI' has started operating the AI learning cluster 'Colossus' equipped with 100,000 NVIDIA H100s, and is scheduled to complete an 'AI learning cluster equipped with 200,000 H100s' within a few months - GIGAZINE
At the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce Annual Presidents' Meeting on December 4, 2024, xAI revealed plans for further expansion of Colossus. According to xAI, Colossus will have at least 1 million AI processing chips built into it in the future.
'When xAI announced that they would call Memphis home to Colossus around June 2024, we recognized this as a historic moment for us,' said Ted Townsend, president and CEO of the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce. 'Memphis has not only provided xAI with the power and speed it needs to grow and thrive, but it has also been able to attract other companies, including NVIDIA, Dell and Supermicro.'
To facilitate xAI's large-scale efforts, the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce has established an xAI Special Operations Team, led by Townsend himself, which will provide xAI with 24-hour concierge services and be led by Troy Parks, senior vice president of global business development, to help xAI seamlessly execute its data center expansion plans.
On the other hand, some activists and lawmakers have raised environmental concerns about xAI's plans to expand its data centers, and in August 2024, the Southern Environmental Law Center called on local authorities in Tennessee to investigate whether xAI was using gas turbines to power its supercomputers without obtaining the necessary permits.
xAI announced on December 5, 2024 that it had raised a total of $6 billion (approximately 900 billion yen) from a total of 97 investors. After the fundraising, xAI's corporate value is expected to exceed $50 billion (7.5 trillion yen), and it has been reported that xAI's competitiveness in the AI industry is increasing.
