Elon Musk's Neuralink's first brain-machine interface implanted in patient's brain plays a game live

Noland Arbaugh , a quadriplegic who became the first human to receive a BMI implant from Neuralink , a brain-machine interface (BMI) development company founded by Elon Musk, live-streamed on X (formerly Twitter) how he was 'playing a game just by thinking.'

In January 2024, Neuralink announced the first successful BMI implant surgery. The person who underwent the surgery was Arbaugh, who became quadriplegic in a diving accident, and the BMI implanted in his head is named 'Telepathy'. Arbaugh has already used 'Telepathy' to play games such as Civilization VI, Mario Kart, and online chess.

Arbaugh will be broadcasting live on X from 14:00 on November 22, 2024 local time, and will attempt to use 'Telepathy' for 72 consecutive hours. The test is to demonstrate the durability and performance of the N1 implant implanted in Arbaugh's head during long-term use. Prior to the test, Arbaugh has been working with Neuralink engineers on research sessions of up to eight hours a day, and the purpose is to investigate whether the device can withstand longer periods of use.

Arbaugh said he has often stayed up for 24, 48 or even 72 hours straight in the past, but said if he ever felt his health getting worse, he would stop and take a break. 'I'm committed to making my health a priority.'

As part of this 72-hour continuous streaming test, Arbaugh streamed a game on X for 11 hours, 31 minutes and 56 seconds.

Arbaugh played ' The Battle of Polytopia ' for about six hours on stream, then played some online chess on Chess.com and GeoGuessr, a game that involves guessing land locations from Google Street View images.

Musk also responded to Arbaugh's gameplay, posting on his X account, 'Noland is playing Polytopia just by thinking with his Neuralink telepathy device.'

The Battle of Polytopia, which Arbaugh was playing, could also be played on Tesla vehicles, Musk's electric car manufacturer, but the feature caused a stir because it could be played while driving.
