While Trump could reportedly urge Congress to repeal the TikTok ban, order the Department of Justice not to enforce it, or come up with a compromise that would involve selling TikTok's US operations, it's unlikely to be an easy solution.
Meanwhile, Glenn Gerstell, a former legal adviser to the National Security Agency, told Bloomberg, 'There's no question that a Trump victory would be a huge win for TikTok. TikTok is now facing a president who has publicly voiced support for repealing the TikTok ban.'
Some insiders at TikTok don't trust Trump, and some are said to be wondering whether he even cares about TikTok now that the election campaign is over.
Still, Gerstell said, 'Nothing's been decided yet because there are a ton of other factors at play, but the tide is shifting in TikTok's favor.'
Of particular note is the behavior of Elon Musk, who played an important role in the Trump campaign. Musk expressed a negative view of banning TikTok from the United States, saying, 'Even if TikTok's withdrawal would benefit X (formerly Twitter),' he said.
TikTok did not respond to Bloomberg's request for comment.
Some see Trump's change of stance in support of TikTok as a sign that his stance toward China is changing.
According to Bloomberg, cybersecurity regulations enacted under the Biden administration in response to cyberattacks from hostile countries such as China and Russia may be ignored or repealed under the second Trump administration. On the other hand, Trump has stated that he will impose tariffs of up to 60% on imports from China, so it is unclear how Trump will develop his China policy.
Technology companies are equally happy and sad about Trump's reelection. The Verge, an IT news site, reported that 'Trump will bring about major changes in AI, cryptocurrency, and EV policy.'
In particular, the influence of Musk, who owns xAI and Tesla, is expected to be strong in AI and EV policies. Trump has also pledged to replace Gary Gensler, Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, who is known for his criticism of virtual currencies, and has called for making the United States a 'Bitcoin superpower.'
In addition, The Washington Post reported that 'Musk's involvement in Trump's inner circle is giving right-wing tech leaders an opportunity to bring a startup mentality to government,' and the changes that could result from Musk's deep involvement in politics as a star of the tech industry are drawing particular attention.
