In the United States, there has long been concern about the risk of confidential information of American citizens being passed on to the Chinese government through TikTok. On March 5, 2024, the ' Protecting Americans from Applications Controlled by Foreign Adversaries Act ' was introduced with the aim of directly regulating TikTok. This bill requires TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to sell TikTok and its affiliated applications, and if the sale is not completed, TikTok will be banned in the United States.
On April 20, the US House of Representatives passed a comprehensive bill worth $95 billion (approximately 14.7 trillion yen) that included a bill to regulate TikTok. President Joe Biden said in a statement, 'I urge the Senate to quickly send this package to my desk and sign it into law,' and it is believed that if the TikTok regulation bill passes the Senate, it will likely be enacted quickly.

Meanwhile, Beckerman, TikTok's Americas public policy chief and lobbying campaigner against TikTok regulation, said in a memo to TikTok employees in the U.S. that he would fight the TikTok ban in court if it was signed.
Beckerman's memo, which was confirmed by foreign media outlets such as Bloomberg, stated, 'Once the bill is signed, we will move to a legal battle in court,' and 'We will continue to fight because this bill clearly violates the First Amendment rights of the approximately 170 million Americans who use TikTok.' Beckerman said he believes the U.S. government's regulation of TikTok violates users' freedom of speech and is unconstitutional.
ByteDance did not immediately respond to inquiries from the Hong Kong daily English-language newspaper South China Morning Post. According to the South China Morning Post, ByteDance has decided to leave political lobbying and legal battles surrounding TikTok to the TikTok team led by Singaporean CEO Shou Chu.
The South China Morning Post reported that while the Chinese government has not officially commented on the bill, Chinese state media have been critical of it.
