X/old Twitter community notes will now be displayed within 20 minutes of posting

' Community Notes ' is a feature that allows users to add background information or corrections when a post on X (formerly Twitter) contains misleading or incorrect information. The official account of X's Community Notes team has announced that Community Notes are now displayed within 20 minutes of posting.

An external study based on open source data found that shares of posts containing community notes fell by about 50%, while posts being deleted increased by about 80%, showing that community notes are highly accurate.

However, when a community note is posted, it appears as a 'suggestion' that is visible only to the contributor. After that, if the contributors evaluate it and find it appropriate, it appears at the bottom of the original post and can be viewed by general users. Therefore, there is a time lag between when a community note is posted and when it becomes visible.

It has been pointed out that misinformation spreads so quickly on social media, including X, that it is not possible to correct the misinformation in time. In November 2023, the American economic newspaper Bloomberg criticized the system, saying, 'Because it takes several hours for a community note to appear after it is written, only a small proportion of users see the fact checks made by the community note compared to the original post.'

So the team introduced a community note called 'Lightning Notes,' which they reported had the fastest time of 14 minutes and 33 seconds from suggestion, and 18 minutes and 20 seconds from posting itself.

The team also says that an update to the iOS app now makes rating community notes twice as fast.

In addition, during the second half of October 2024, community notes were automatically displayed on more than 8,000 posts and were viewed more than 200 million times. In addition, more than 400 community notes were displayed within one hour of being written, and more than 60 community notes were displayed within one hour of being posted.

'Community Notes are useful to people with a variety of perspectives, regardless of political affiliation, and are far more trustworthy than traditional misinformation flags,' the team said.
