The new Mac mini takes up less than half the space of the previous design, at just 12.7cm square, so it can be placed on a desk in a very small space. A side-by-side comparison of the top of the previous model (left) and the model with the M4 (right).
Apple touts the small size, saying, 'This is made possible by the incredible power efficiency of Apple silicon and an innovative thermal architecture that directs air through every level of the system and exhausts it all through the bottom.'
The front of the new Mac mini differs from the previous model in that it now has two USB-C ports, an LED indicator, and an audio jack.
The back looks like this, with a power port, an Ethernet port, an HDMI port, and three USB-C ports. The M4 model supports Thunderblt 4, while the M4 Pro model supports Thunderbolt 5, which allows data transfer up to 120 Gbps.
The new Mac mini is available in two models: the M4 with a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, and the M4 Pro with a maximum 14-core CPU and a maximum 20-core GPU. The M4 Pro is the first chip announced this time, and will be installed in the Mac mini for the first time.
According to Apple, compared to the Intel Core i7-equipped Mac mini, the M4-equipped Mac mini's performance is 'up to 2.8 times faster when applying audio effect plug-ins in Logic Pro projects,' 'up to 13.3 times faster gaming performance in World of Warcraft: The War Within,' and 'up to 33 times faster image upscaling performance when enhancing photos in Photomator.'
In addition, the performance of the M4-equipped Mac mini compared to the M1-equipped Mac mini is touted as being 'up to 1.7 times faster at calculating spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel,' 'up to 2 times faster at on-device AI speech-to-text conversion in MacWhisper,' and 'up to 4.9 times faster at merging panoramic images in Adobe Lightroom Classic.'
In addition, compared to the Intel Core i7-equipped Mac mini, the M4 Pro-equipped Mac mini is said to perform spreadsheet calculations up to four times faster in Microsoft Excel, perform scene edit detection in Adobe Premiere Pro up to 9.4 times faster, perform on-device AI speech-to-text conversion in MacWhisper up to 20 times faster, and process DNA sequence base calls up to 26 times faster in Oxford Nanopore MinKNOW.
Additionally, compared to the Mac mini with the M2 Pro, Apple states that the Mac mini with the M4 Pro 'apply up to 1.8 times more audio effect plug-ins in Logic Pro projects,' 'render motion graphics to RAM up to two times faster in Motion,' and 'complete 3D rendering in Blender up to 2.9 times faster.'
The M4/M4 Pro also supports Apple Intelligence, which has been available since macOS Sequoia 15.1. At the time of writing, Apple Intelligence can be used by setting the language to English (US), and you can experience proofreading with the composition tool and the new Siri, which can handle complex tasks. The following article will give you a good idea of what Apple Intelligence can do.
'The power efficiency of Apple silicon and an innovative new thermal architecture give the new Mac mini incredible performance in an incredibly small design,' said John Tarnus, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. 'The combination of the performance of the M4 and new M4 Pro chip, enhanced connectivity on both the front and back, and the arrival of Apple Intelligence makes the Mac mini more capable and versatile than ever before -- and there's nothing like it.'
The price is 94,800 yen (tax included) for the minimum configuration of 16GB unified memory and 256GB SSD storage for the M4 (10-core CPU + 10-core GPU) model. The maximum configuration of 64GB unified memory, 8TB SSD storage, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet for the M4 Pro (14-core CPU + 20-core GPU) model is 713,800 yen (tax included). Reservations will be available from October 30th, and sales will begin on November 8, 2024.
