Google Photos starts displaying labels showing whether photos have been edited by AI

Traditionally, removing unwanted objects from photos was a complex and time-consuming task, but in recent years, AI-based features such as '

Magic Editor ' and ' Eraser Magic ' have been rolled out, which allow users to easily edit photos by reconstructing them using AI. On October 24, 2024, Google announced that it would display information in Google Photos indicating that 'AI edits have been made' in order to improve transparency.

According to Google, starting October 28, 2024, Google Photos will label images edited using AI tools such as Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, and Zoom Image Quality Improvement as 'Edited with Google AI.'

Google says, 'Images edited with these AI tools have embedded metadata based on the International Press Telecommunications Council ( IPTC ) technical standard, which can be displayed in Google Photos along with information such as the file name, the location where it was taken, and the backup status.' This will make it easier for users to know whether images have been edited with AI, improving transparency.

In addition, Google said, 'Labels indicating that an edit was made with AI will not only indicate that a generative AI was used, but also non-generative features that consist of different photo elements, such as 'best take' or ' featured together ,' will be labeled in the same way because they will have IPTC metadata embedded in them.'

On the other hand, foreign media The Verge pointed out that 'this metadata can easily be removed if someone intentionally tries to delete it. ' In response, Google said, 'This work is not complete yet. We will continue to gather user feedback and evaluate additional solutions to increase transparency of AI edits.'
