The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has used the same type of spacesuit for about 40 years, but AxEMU is a new suit developed by NASA in partnership with Axiom Space, a private space infrastructure development company. A prototype demonstration was also released on March 16, 2023.

The actual product and details were unveiled at the International Astronautical Congress held in Milan, Italy on October 16, 2024. Below is an image of AxEMU released by Axiom Space at the time of the announcement. According to Axiom Space, AxEMU has significantly improved cold resistance compared to conventional space suits, and can withstand the lowest temperatures in permanently shaded areas for two hours. In addition, AxEMU is designed to fit all body types and is described as 'evolvable.'

Viewed from the back it looks like this:

'We are ushering in a new era of space exploration. Partnerships are essential to the commercialization of space. They build strong, cohesive teams and enable industry experts to deliver cutting-edge technology, specialized products and services to drive innovation. For the first time, we are leveraging the expertise of other industries to create better solutions for space,' said Russell Ralston, EVP of Extravehicular Activities at Axiom Space, about AxEMU.

AxEMU's partnerships include NASA and Axiom Space, as well as Italian luxury fashion brand Prada . According to Ralston, Prada has deep knowledge and experience in materials and manufacturing processes, and Prada's design and product development teams worked with Axiom Space engineers to support innovative work on space suits that protect astronauts from the unique challenges of the lunar environment. Lorenzo Bertelli, the great-grandson of Prada's founder and the company's chief marketing officer, said, 'One of our company's values, which perfectly reflects the spirit of the Prada brand and the vision of my ancestors, is 'going beyond limits.' We shared our expertise in high-performance materials, functions and sewing techniques, and learned a lot at the same time. I'm sure we will continue to explore new challenges, broaden our horizons and build new scenarios together.'
