On September 24, 2024, Elon Musk, the owner of X, posted a message suggesting a change to the blocking specifications. Until now, when a user was blocked by X, the user's profile, posts, followers/following list, and posted media could not be viewed. However, Elon Musk, who had long disliked X's blocking function , had previously said about X's blocking specifications, 'I intend to make it possible for blocked users to view public posts.'

Then, on October 17, 2024, @XEng , one of X's official accounts, announced a change to the blocking specifications. With this change, blocked accounts will be able to view public posts. However, they will not be able to engage with them (like, reply, repost).

@XEng explained the reason for changing the blocking specification: 'The current blocking feature can be used to share or hide harmful or personal information about blocked people. However, this update will allow users to see whether such actions have been taken, which will increase transparency.'

On October 18th, the day after X announced the block specification change, Bluesky announced that it had gained 500,000 new users in the past 24 hours.

In the past, when X changed its specifications or announced new features, Bluesky gained a large number of new users. When X was banned in Brazil in September 2024, Bluesky suddenly rose to the top of the App Store's free app rankings and gained 2 million new users.
