Wimbledon to completely replace line judges with machines from the 2025 tournament

It has been announced that Wimbledon, one of the four major tennis tournaments (Grand Slams), will abolish line judges and fully adopt machine judging technology from the 2025 tournament. This decision was made after successful trials at the 2024 tournament.

In tennis tournaments, when a player challenges a line decision made by an umpire, Hawk- Eye technology is used to immediately display a CG image of the challenge. Wimbledon also adopted the challenge system in 2007, and Hawk-Eye was introduced.

Even after the introduction of Hawk-Eye, the umpire and lines judges continued to make the line decisions, but at the US Open in the summer of 2020, which was held amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Hawk-Eye's real-time line judgment service 'Hawk-Eye Live' was introduced in place of lines judges, and lines judges have been abolished at subsequent US Opens and Australian Opens.

Wimbledon will continue to have line judges, but will trial the use of machines in 2024. The results proved to be sufficiently reliable, and it was decided that 'it is time to take an important step in maximizing the accuracy of umpires,' and that machines will be fully implemented and line judges will be abolished from the 2025 tournament.

Sally Bolton, of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, home of Wimbledon, said: 'The decision to introduce the system follows extensive consideration and consultation. At Wimbledon we take very seriously our responsibility to balance tradition and innovation. Lines judges have been a central part of the Wimbledon umpires for decades and we recognise their enormous achievements and are grateful for their dedication and service.'

The 'challenge' is used because it is difficult to see the ball's impact mark, so it is not present at the French Open, which is held on clay courts, one of the four major tournaments. However, Hawk-Eye itself is installed.

The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has announced that from 2025 onwards, it will phase out line judges across the entire ATP Tour and use machines to referee the matches.
