Amazon to introduce AI tool 'Vision-Assisted Package Retrieval' to 1,000 vans by early 2025 to help Amazon delivery staff quickly find packages from delivery vehicle loading platforms

Amazon has developed an AI tool called Vision-Assisted Package Retrieval (VAPR ) that illuminates packages with check marks to make it easier for Amazon delivery staff to find the package they're looking for.

VAPR is a system consisting of a camera, light, and speaker. When a delivery van arrives at a delivery location, VAPR reads the barcodes on the packages in real time, projects a green circle on packages that are close to their destination and a red cross on packages that are not, and guides the delivery person to the correct package with audio and visual cues.

The camera and light are attached to the roof of the cargo area.

This system is said to eliminate the need to sort packages by delivery destination, read labels, and visually check customer names and addresses.

VAPR is an adaptation of a system originally developed for logistics fulfillment centers, and is built by training a machine learning model to recognize a wide variety of labels and packages under a variety of lighting conditions and package characteristics.

One delivery worker who tested the VAPR said, 'Before, it would take me two to five minutes to organize a package for the next location. With the VAPR, it takes about a minute. It's so much easier.'

The VAPR is expected to be deployed in 1,000 electric delivery vans in partnership with Rivian by early 2025.

The Louisiana fulfillment center will be equipped with cutting-edge robots, including robots that automatically assemble and sort boxes, and thousands of fully autonomous mobile robots that transport packages. The facility alone will employ up to 2,500 people.
