' Settlers of Catan ' was released in 1995 and swept the German Game of the Year Award and the German Game Award, making it one of the landmark board games of the time.

It seems that creator Teuber had been thinking about turning the game into a novel from a fairly early stage, and after reading the works of Rebecca Gable, who was already famous as a historical novelist, he thought, 'This person must be able to write the story of Catan,' and approached Gable. The novel 'Settlers of Catan' was written in a three-legged system, with Gable writing based on Teuber's ideas, and was published in Germany in 2003. An English translation was also published in 2011.

The novel is set in the year 850. The story follows

foster brothers Kandamir and Osmund, who are on a journey from Erasund, a small coastal village in Northern Europe, in search of a new life. After a shipwreck, they arrive on the island of Catan, a land of pagan legends, where they form a society and come into conflict over the mysterious queen, Siglind.

The new novel was written by Teuber himself and is set in the year 860. The story tells of three half-brothers, Thorolf, Yngvi and Dygur, who rescued the daughter of the Viking leader Holdor, who then targeted them and banished them from their land, fleeing to Catan, the land of the sun.

According to Polygon, the game news site, publisher Blackstone Publishing explained, 'While Gable's novel was historical fiction, Teuber's new work is an integral part of the Catan story, and when writing his autobiography, My Journey to Catan, Teuber decided to write the novel himself.'
