Carpentpod is a self-propelled wooden table that delivers beer and snacks
Gilliam de Carpentier, a game creator who has worked on the action RPG 'Horizon: Zero Dawn,' has shared the process of how he built his 'Carpentopod,' a coffee table that has multiple legs like a crab that can walk on its own, with built-in

The Carpenter Pod comes clattering along. There are beer bottles and plates of snacks on the top of the pod, but the pod moves smoothly so the bottles don't swing or tip over.
As it got closer, it rotated by moving only the right leg and adjusted its direction.
Carpenter pod arrived.
Having completed its mission, the Carpenter Pod returned to its designated location.
Carpentpod began as a hobby project created by de Carpentier in 2008. After acquiring skills in woodworking and electronics, he integrated the software to create a wirelessly controlled walking coffee table.
The shape of the legs with triangular feet is reminiscent of sculptor Theo Jansen's famous work ' Strandbeest '. However, the proportions of the parts of the Carpentpod's legs are different from those of the Strandbeest, and the legs have more joints and rounded feet than the Strandbeest, making them more compact and less prone to slipping.
The basic structure of the legs was optimized through simulation using a genetic algorithm, and the shape and combination of leg parts that would provide the best walking motion were selected.
The Carpenter Pod is able to walk freely thanks to the parts designed in this way, the microcomputer board built into it, and the controller connected to the microcomputer board via Bluetooth.
The name Carpentpod is a combination of the classical Latin words 'carpentum' (vehicle) and 'pod' (leg). Also, although it is not known whether Mr. de Carpentier was aware of this, 'carpentum' is also related to his name 'Carpentier', which is derived from carts and woodworkers, making it a perfect name for the wooden self-propelled table invented by Mr. de Carpentier.
